In less than 24 hours, I've raised $806 to help children in Cambodia using a new feature in Facebook Causes. Not two minutes had passed after I set up my birthday campaign and added it to my profile, I got pinged from Facebook friends asking how they could install it. Celebrating Birthdays is definitely part of Facebook culture.

The first part of the problem is that India still has low literacy rates - the 2009 Annual Status of Education Report shows that between classes 1 to 8 only around 40% of children can read a class 2 level text in their own language and an even lower 23% of children can ready easy sentences in English - sentences of the kind "What is your name?"

Here's a few ideas to help make charitable giving get on your calendar each month for 2009. For my 50th birthday, I held a 50th Birthday Card Photo Remix Contest on flickr and donated $50 the winner's favorite charity. An easy way to support the Nature Conservancy if you're on Facebook is to install (Lil) Green Patch.

At the end of that panel, we all hoped there would be a larger nonprofit presence on the agenda for this 2009. And yes, indeed, in 2009 there were many more panel proposals. In 2008, I was on one of the few nonprofit panels on the agenda. It was organized by Ed Schipul. about or by folks who work with nonprofits and voting.

This can take place in a variety ways, including brown bag lunches "Facebook Friday," presenting examples from other organizations experiences, sharing market research data about consumer trends and social media. Especially in this economy. The key to crossing the chasm to adoption is education, awareness, and discussion internally.

User-Generated Flickr Birthday Card Contest: For my 50th birthday, held a contest where friends got to remix embarrassing photos of me into a 50th Birthday Card on Flickr. Beth's 52nd Birthday : This was campaign that used Facebook Causes and the Birthday wish feature and a matching donation. I donated $50 to the winner's charity.
