These challenges helped provide early publicity, support, collaboration opportunities, and funding for now-famous "tech for good" organizations such as Ushahidi , FrontlineSMS , and many others. Ushahidi got its start in early 2008. The NetSquared Challenges Foster Tech Innovation. and that year we came in second.

And nonprofits and lots of others working to benefit the public can use its tools to be able to do their work better. The organization got started when a group of Kenyan bloggers led by Erik Hersman began doing online mapping of violence reports after the 2008 Kenyan election. These folks do astonishing work. So much innovation.
