Last August, I saw the impact of Twitter's velocity first-hand with a fundraising experiment. As an outside observer, the lessons that I took away from this effort were: Having people change their avatar to a pea photo gave a visual clue to the campaign and helped it spread. I was able to raise $2,500 in 90 minutes at Gnomedex.

It was an echo campaign to complement a radio roadblock on Friday, September 19, 2008 when the NAB encouraged all radio stations to run a Red Cross PSA at 1 pm EDT. I'd try to figure out how in the world to measure how many people changed their avatars.
