The Center was established in 2007 by the Vietnam Scientific Association for Development of Talents, Human Resources. Its eight major islands (in terms of landmass) are Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan (Borneo), Sulawesi (Celebes), and Irian Jaya (the western half of Papua New Guinea). The country spans eight time zones.
