It funds primarily organizations that serve the New York City metropolitan area or New York State. This first grant allowed us to pilot a Bookshare outreach project in the New York metro area, with a de facto focus on senior citizens with vision loss.

Orangutan Outreach is a New York-based organization whose mission is to save critically endangered orangutans and protect their rainforest home. Founder Richard Zimmerman started Orangutan Outreach in 2007, and the organization grew quickly thanks to a close affiliation with the Animal Planet series Orangutan Island.

But the Internet has changed all that. The New York organization last year collected more than 60 hours of footage of the organization’s workers and volunteers helping AIDS patients in Uganda, tsunami victims in India, and poor residents of El Salvador, and it soon plans to use that extra footage for an extensive online video campaign.

And that should be happening, as in those pieces of literature and reports published, probably around July of 2007. One of the things that has inspired us is the city of Chicago and the city of New York. Ingrid: For folks who have access to the Internet, I would recommend of course, our website. New York Every year, social entrepreneurs and donors (along with a whole lot of other folks) converge on New York City. I started doing this back in 2007 , when we won our first big federal contract for Bookshare, to take it from 3,000 students back then to more than 350,000 students now. Enough said!
