API Explained: This Technology Will Transform Your Company’s Charitable Giving

Curious how an API can power corporate philanthropy programs? We interviewed GlobalGiving’s Chief Product Officer to explore how companies use our free nonprofit API to power charitable apps and websites for companies around the world.

Sayuri Bryant

GlobalGiving Chief Product Officer

Who She Is:

Sayuri leads GlobalGiving's product team, a talented group of programmers, system administrators, developers, and designers that are always innovating to improve the GlobalGiving website and product offerings. Before joining GlobalGiving, Sayrui learned how to create an environment where great ideas can be heard and evaluated at a technology startup 20 years ago. She has held leadership positions at Visa, Bloomberg BNA, and Ticketmaster before coming to GlobalGiving to focus on technology work that creates the best possible experience for users trying to accelerate community-led change through generous donors, workplace giving programs, and corporate philanthropy.

Q: Sayuri, what exactly is an “API”?

A: API stands for Application Programming Interface, a method for integrating one program into another app or website. For example, with GlobalGiving’s API, you can seamlessly build workplace giving programs directly into your app or website for your users to connect with vetted nonprofits rallying behind a specific cause, country, or region.

Q: How do companies around the world use GlobalGiving’s API?

A: First, some background on GlobalGiving’s technology foundation might be helpful. Since 2002, GlobalGiving has funded more than 36,790 vetted charitable projects on its website and trusted donation platform. Companies want to help their customers and employees give to a good cause, but they often don’t want them to have to leave their website or app to make it happen.

That’s where GlobalGiving’s API comes in. Companies grant their users access to our portfolio of more than 7,000 nonprofits operating in 175+ countries when they integrate our free charity API into their website or app. The other main benefit? Users can simply give to a charity of their choice, and we’ll handle the rest.

Q: So, GlobalGiving’s API is similar to a website widget or plug-in??

A: Yes. Our nonprofit API enables any website to display charitable projects by country, region, and theme for purposes as varied as birthday celebrations to earthquake responses.

Q: How does the GlobalGiving API enable credit card donations?

This is a great question, because if you know anything about international giving programs, you know just how difficult it can be to make credit card donations overseas. That’s why we built our API using Braintree’s extensive credit card payment system. This way, users can access Braintree’s robust payment architecture without worrying about the complex details of PCI compliance or IRS regulations for charitable donations

Q: How have companies used GlobalGiving’s nonprofit API?

A: I prefer to show, not tell! Here are some of my favorite stories from real companies we’ve helped with our world-class API.

    API By Country Or Region
JustGiving.com, a UK-based fundraising website, relies onGlobalGiving’s vast network of nonprofits operating in their home country to disburse millions of pounds to vetted, trusted nonprofits.
    API For Employee Giving
Benevity uses our API to offer companies a one-stop shop for global employee engagement. By featuring all eligible international organizations vetted by GlobalGiving, they handle the user interface, and we handle the global disbursements.
    API For Cause Marketing
The Guestbook lets customers donate five percent of their purchase to the charity of their choice as part of its loyalty program options.
    API For E-Commerce
The Give & Grow Shopify app from Pledge seamlessly integrates donations into online shopping by allowing business owners to choose a cause and donation amount for each of their products.
    API For Celebrations
Heartful.ly allowed users to fundraise in honor of special occasions with charitable wedding registries and birthday fundraising pages. By integrating with our API, they were able to weave giving into celebration.
    API For Disaster Response
KizunaCranes.com was an engaging site designed to raise funds for the Japan earthquake relief efforts.

Q: Those examples are so exciting! I spoke recently with a rewards platform that wants to do more good. How might they implement a charity API on their website?

A: There are so many possibilities. They could integrate our charitable gift card API so their users can cash in their points for gift cards to be redeemed on GlobalGiving.org. Or they could integrate our catalog of vetted nonprofits and charitable projects to enable users to redeem points within their website or app. They can give back to communities who make or buy their products by processing donations with each purchase. Another idea is to start a loyalty program where they thank top customers with charitable gift cards.

Q: Everybody loves lists. In closing, can you share a short list of ways a company could use our free API?

A: With the GlobalGiving API, you can:

      1. Get an updated list of all vetted nonprofit projects on GlobalGiving
      2. Display information about specific projects listed on GlobalGiving by theme or another criteria of your choosing
      3. Send GlobalGiving Gift Cards
      4. Enable a donation to a specific project
      5. Get up-to-date progress reports from community-led projectsd
