Statistics Canada released the results of the 2023 Canadian Survey on Business Conditions, which includes data specific to the nonprofit sector. According to the report, less than half of board of director positions for nonprofits were held by women (47.3%). Organizations focused on social services (70.4%) and the environment (56%) had the greatest proportion of women holding board of directors positions, while nonprofit organizations focused on business, professional associations, and unions (36.4%) had the lowest proportion of women holding board of directors positions. Data surrounding funding sources portrays that health and social services nonprofits received the largest proportion of provincial and territorial funding, while grant-making, fundraising and voluntarism promotion-related organizations (3.9%) were among the organizations with the lowest proportions of funding. The survey found that registered charities (41.5%) are more reliant on individual donations than nonprofits (4%). The report highlights that overall demand for nonprofit services is outpacing capacity to meet demand.
