Second Harvest released the Hungry for Change Report, developed based on a survey of 1400 nonprofits offering charitable food programs across Canada.  The study found that 36% of food charities in Canada are forced to turn people away and are bracing for new demand in 2024. Nonprofits are expecting an 18% increase in demand for services, which translates into 1 million people in Canada needing to access a food charity for the first time this year.

Key findings from the study:

  • 36% of nonprofits say they have a waitlist of people who cannot access their support. In Toronto, that number increases to 50%.
  • 43% of nonprofits say they’ll need 50 percent or more perishable food next year to meet the demand.
  • 52% of nonprofits say they’ll need 50 percent or more non-perishable food next year to meet the demand.
  • The average need for funding per nonprofit increased by 13% from last year equating to $76,000 per nonprofit.
