The Daily Bread Food Bank, in partnership with the North York Harvest Food Bank, released the 2023 Who’s Hungry Report, which provides a profile of food insecurity and poverty in Toronto. As of 2023, one in ten people living in Toronto rely on food banks, which has doubled since 2022. The cost-of-living crisis, wage stagnation, and insufficient income support have driven more people into poverty in 2023, and the increase in need has put a strain on food banks across Canada. The study found that 31% of Torontonians relying on food banks went an entire day without eating in the past 12 months, and 55% had missed a meal to pay for something else in the past 3 months. This report highlights the dire need for governmental support and provides a strong call to action with recommendations for each level of government.
