The Government of Canada, through the Northern Contaminants Program, launched a call for proposals for funding to support Northerners and scientists in researching and monitoring long-range contaminants and plastic pollution in the Canadian Arctic. The Northern Contaminants Program funds research-related activities in the following regions: Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Nunavik and Nunatsiavut, including the traditional territories of Yukon First Nations and of the Dene and Metis of the Northwest Territories, and all of Inuit Nunangat.

The Northern Contaminants Program supports multi-year projects under the following 5 subprograms:

  1. Human health
  2. Environmental monitoring and research
  3. Community-based monitoring and research
  4. Communications, capacity and outreach
  5. Program coordination and Indigenous partnerships

For the program, there are no restrictions on who can apply. Past participants have included:

  • Indigenous governments and organizations
  • Academic based researchers
  • Government based researchers
  • Not-for-profit organizations
  • Northern or Indigenous community groups or individuals

The deadline to apply to the 2024 Call for Proposals is February 13, 2024.
