ComIT.org commissioned a new survey as part of an ongoing series of research to delve into the state of current workplace biases, challenges, and issues faced by visible minorities. The study found that over half (51.4%) of recent and employed immigrants report to a manager who is less qualified and Caucasian. Moreover, 60.8% of immigrants indicated that they have experienced workplace microaggressions or subtle forms of discrimination in the workplace, with 22.4% reporting weekly occurrences, 21% reporting monthly occurrences, and 17.4% reporting daily occurrences. Over half (61.8%) of immigrants say that they have been passed over for a promotion or job at least once in favour of a less-qualified Caucasian candidate. The research found that a combined 63% of employed immigrants ‘agree’ (42.8%) or ‘strongly agree’ (24%) that there are existing systematic barriers within their workplaces that hinder the advancement of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
