According to Statistics Canada, over two in five (42%) Canadians aged 15 and older provide unpaid care to children younger than 15, as well as adults with long-term conditions or disabilities. While 13% of these caregivers care for both of these care-dependent groups, resulting in 1.8 million Canadians sandwiched between multiple care responsibilities. This data is based on the Canadian Social Survey – the study sheds light on the landscape of unpaid caregiving in Canada as of 2022. Based on the data, having multiple caregiving responsibilities was associated with an increased likelihood of experiencing negative impacts on health and wellbeing – with 86% of sandwiched caregivers reporting at least one negative impact on their physical health and well-being.
