Beth Kanter’s Social Media Listening for Nonprofits

Without a doubt, one of my favorite social media and nonprofit writers is Beth Kanter. I’ve written about her work before.

This slideshare presentation is from her social media wiki and discusses the importance of knowing what people are saying about your agency on social media sites. Enjoy!

  1. Thank you so much for your kind words. What’s your key takeaway?

  2. As a full-time fundraiser and accidental techie, I think my key takeaway is how similar prepping people for fundraising is to scanning social media to see how people are talking about your organization.

To train volunteers or staff on fundraising, you have to teach them how to listen to what the donor is saying, both verbally and nonverbally. You have to listen to the donor becuase they want to share their interest and story with you.

At the same time you need to listen to what people are saying about you on social media outlets because they want everyone to hear their opinions.

It takes time to learn how to truly listen. Once you get it, you’ll be better able to engage them in your cause. It just so happens that social media adds the element of technology.

One of my friends in Kiwanis used to always say, God gave me two ears and one mouth and not two mouths and one ear for a reason.
