It's been awhile since I've shared the progress of The Tech Virtual , the web and Second Life-based virtual exhibit workshop that The Tech Museum of Innovation opened in December of 2007. In January, I wrote about the challenges and opportunities of using Second Life as a design space. But that's just a start.

I stumbled upon the term "pivot browsing" while researching a workshop I gave about tagging. A Second Life for the Archivist. It is another excellent example of "pivot" browsing, similar to del.icio.us where you navigate by tags, most views, or slide shares by users and events. Bottom-Up Tagging.

On June 4, we opened The Tech Virtual Test Zone , a new 2000 sq ft gallery at The Tech Museum of Innovation featuring exhibits on the theme of art, film, and music that were originally developed in Second Life by a community of creative amateurs. In Second Life, I am not an expert--but many of our virtual exhibit designers are.

Recently we set up an office in Second Life, on the Nonprofit Commons Plush island, and we just purchased our own island in Second Life. She came to one of our Every Dot Connects workshops where we were teaching Web 2.0 Our goal is to develop a virtual retreat where cancer patients can escape their physical pain.

I had a healthy second life as a slam poet, and I loved the world of artists and performance. I designed electricity workshops for families. But internship after internship didn't live up to those expectations. I wrote puppet shows about science and ran a "stump the mathematician" booth. I got hooked all over again.

In this case, staff are producing digital assets and managing a back-end program (read: software techies) to provide visitors with the content they want via passive tracking of usage.
