Creative credit card donation scam

Robert Weiner

The scammer had done enough research to use specific references to our college to make it appear genuine, although there was considerable broken English in the emails. A friend forwarded the following description of a scam aimed at a well-known college. Fortunately, they didn't fall for it. I would like to make everyone aware of a recent situation here that is most likely a scam to launder stolen credit card funds, appearing as a gift.

Controlling data entry

Robert Weiner

A member of the PRSPCT-L listserve (for prospect researchers) asked "What do other institutions do to regulate or “police” data entry work, specifically when you have multiple users with authority to make updates?". It's a tough problem. Here are a few approaches (other than locking down data entry): Policies. You need clear data entry standards. Security. You need to control who can make changes and what they can change. Training.

The Idealware Research Fund

Robert Weiner

Our friends at Idealware (a nonprofit technology resource provider) have created a new fund to support their research. Many of Idealware's reports have been funded by foundations and some have had corporate sponsorship (and some are commissioned by TechSoup.org too). As you probably know, neither foundation nor corporate support is a reliable funding source these days.

Discussion of Donor Data Retention

Robert Weiner

Advancement Services Best Practices Donor Databases Fundraising Prospect Research A few months ago I wrote a post on the topic of whether nonprofits should delete old donor records. The same topic came up recently on the APRA''s listserve, PRSPCT-L. The original question: My organization is working on a data retention policy and wondering if others have insights to share. There seems to be a feeling we should remove any records that have not had an action in 7 years.

Lame spam of the day: weight loss blog comment

Robert Weiner

Researching in Search engines I eventually have discovered this page. Some of the lamest spam I see comes in the form of comments on my blog posts. Some sounds convincing, but my spam filters (Akismet and Bad Behavior) are incredibly good at catching them. It's particularly entertaining when the spam is trying to link to one of my spam of the day posts.). Here's an example. This one's a transparent ad for a weight loss program, but often I have to look harder to figure out what's going on.

Editable List of Donor Databases

Robert Weiner

The entries came from a variety of other lists and from customer satisfaction surveys done by Campbell Research, NTEN, and Idealware. Over the past few years I've been compiling what turned out to be a huge list of donor databases. Once I posted the list I started getting requests to add links to vendor websites, tags, and comments. Now the good folks at Aspiration have taken my list and put it into the Social Source Commons wiki. read more.

That took some research, and was easier once WP was installed in a test environment. Several friends who have decided to explore WordPress have asked how I built my site. Here are the steps I went through: 1) I hired a designer, Robyn Smith ( [link] ). Robyn installed WP on my existing web host ( dotable.com ). How Many Donor Databases Are There?

Robert Weiner

Mission Research. I thought it might be useful to compile a list of all of the commercial donor databases I’m aware of. This list came from my head, my bookmarks, and lists compiled by NTEN and Idealware for their donor management software surveys (and I’m not certain all of these are actually donor databases). It does not include custom systems, of which there are many. I am not planning to keep this list updated — that sounds like a full-time job.
