Phishing scam of the day: U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change lottery

Robert Weiner

It arrives as a nice-looking 4-page PDF attachment from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (well, nice looking if you ignore the creative spelling and the fact that the typeface and font color changes with every paragraph).

Lame spam of the day: Fake eFaxes

Robert Weiner

View this fax using your PDF reader. This one's scary since I'm an eFax user. But I was suspicious that it was asking me to click on a link (pointing to a server in Germany) rather than open an attachment. There were lots of warnings in 2010 about fake eFax messages delivering malware. I don't know what this one does and don't intend to find out. Here's what they look like. Sender: eFax (message@inbound.efax.com). Subject: Corporate eFax message - 4 pages.

Lame spam of the day: Instant Acrobat Upgrade

Robert Weiner

Subject: Upgrade to Latest PDF Reader for Windows. Create rich, polished PDF files from any application that prints. Encrypt and share PDF files more securely. - This has been a great year for PDF Reader/Writer and it's all because of You. Since Adobe seems to update Acrobat weekly, this message seems plausible. Some quick indicators that it isn't real: I get updates through the installed Adobe Updater, not as email messages.

Variant 2: (These had a PDF attachment rather than a URL to click on. ). I got four of these today. No graphics, butchered syntax. Several mentions that you can call the EFTPS for help, but no phone number. Do people really fall for these things? Sender: message daemon (message.daemon@eftps.com) -- does that inspire confidence? Subject: Your Tax Payment ID 05674565 is failed. Other variants had ID = 38543692, 56989098, and 69452501).

Lame spam of the day: Validate Your Internet Listing – Yellow PagesUSA

Robert Weiner

The attachment is a PDF so it's most likely safe but not completely risk free. The Yellow Pages using spam to get listings? I searched for subject line and found an example of what I'm guessing is the attachment. The fine print at the bottom says: We are compiling data for Yellow PagesUSA Corp. It is our objective to advertise your company products and service. List your production category and subcategory for goodsand service advertisement in your area.

Creating bookmarks and hyperlinks in Acrobat Pro 5

Robert Weiner

I can still use Acrobat Distiller as a printer to create PDF output, and use Acrobat Pro to edit the output. I’ve tried lots of free PDF creation software and haven’t found one that resolves these problems. Word 2003 and Acrobat Professional 5 aren’t on speaking terms. As far as I’ve been able to tell, PDFMaker, which provides 1-click integration with Word, is incompatible with Word 2003 and higher.
