On Uncommon Ground

Judi Sohn

It was difficult to roll out in a cookie-cutter fashion to many organizations at once…which when you're a large company dealing with smaller organizations I suppose is probably key to a product's financial success.

Open Letter to Salesforce Nonprofit Admins

Judi Sohn

In the 20 months since I left Fight Colorectal Cancer, I would guess that I’ve logged in to no less than 150 nonprofit Salesforce organizations. Profiles, roles, organization-wide defaults, sharing settings. Don’t let that be your organization.

What Google+ users can learn from nonprofits

Judi Sohn

Sure they have tweaks in technology to work through to make stream organization and circle management more intuitive. After all is said and done, an organization’s value in the world is defined by improvement in its constituents’ lives, not the organization’s bottom line. The bottom line allows the organization to serve more. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m fascinated by Google+.

Google now denies program to nonprofits they used to serve

Judi Sohn

Both IRS-recognized nonprofit organizations are using the Education Edition of Google Apps, which offer more features, support and storage space than the Free edition. In both cases, I only had to fill out a simple form providing the organizations’ Tax ID number to verify its nonprofit status. Google used to offer the Education Edition free of charge to any 501(c)3 organization. Now organizations can apply and qualify once and get all the products.

Real-world Salesforce Visual Workflow for a nonprofit

Judi Sohn

But I can’t write a trigger and this organization has $0 to spend on letting me hire someone to do the work. I love the new Salesforce Visual Workflow. I can’t code a line of Apex but with Flows, I can automate processes in ways that just warm the heart of my inner wannabe geek.

Introducing Apsona batch gift entry for the Nonprofit Starter Pack

Judi Sohn

While Common Ground’s batch tool was far from perfect, a lot of organizations used it and relied on it. The tool is primarily designed for individual donor gifts, but could be adapted for organization gifts depending on how rollups are set up and the fields that are added in the batch.

Early first impressions of Salesforce Spring ’12

I won’t speculate here as to what that price is, but I’ve heard rumors and suffice to say, it may be tough for smaller organizations to swallow even with the Foundation’s discount. Disclaimer: I am a Salesforce MVP and a soon-to-be employee of Convio, a Salesforce partner.

Life after Common Ground: Part 6 – Apsona

Both applications are generously donated by their developers to non-profit organizations, so there’s no comparison on price. While Salesforce reports have improved a great deal in the last year or so, many organizations have difficulty with the concept of report types.

Life after Common Ground: Not-so-final thoughts

Judi Sohn

Organizations want to feel that they’re in partnership with the companies they’re working with. 6 weeks ago, I began a series of blog posts highlighting different Salesforce apps I’ve been working with at KELL Partners since leaving Blackbaud/Common Ground behind six months ago. Here’s a summary of those posts and the features I highlighted, in case you missed any: Part 1: Nonprofit Starter Pack – Opportunity payments.

Moving on to my next adventure

Judi Sohn

It has nothing whatsoever to do with my faith in the organization or my satisfaction with where things are heading. In fact, the organization has had an incredible surge in the past year or two thanks to both the rebranding and the efforts of my amazing colleagues. The organization needs someone managing day-to-day operations who is physically in the office more than once a month. I love feeling connected to organizations of different sizes and missions.

Need to leave Common Ground? Analyze first. Then react.

Judi Sohn

From the moment the end of Common Ground was announced, I’ve watched helplessly as two things happened: Organizations on Common Ground got angry (and a little panicked) and vendors and consultants who sell services and applications competitive to Common Ground seized opportunity.

Frustrated with online project management tools

There is no bird's eye view for an organization. People in charge of the organization can look across all projects. I am tearing my hair out. Or I will, as soon as I can figure out where the task is to do that and who's responsible. . We have a team of 7 staff members.

If Google+ was a comfy couch at a conference…

Judi Sohn

There are lots of organized networking opportunities. For a while yesterday, Google turned on the spigot and folks were able to freely invite others to Google+. In that window of opportunity, I snagged an invite from NTEN’s Amy Sample Ward and have spent the last day playing around with it in between other projects. Most posts and conversations today in my circles have been focused around making sense out of it all. Is it a Facebook killer?

Apple, it’s time to move parental controls to the cloud

Judi Sohn

So it’s surprising to me that thus far, Apple has done little to help families organize their iLives. We’re an Apple family, since way before it was cool. Right now, I have a 2.5 year old iMac that is still going strong, iPad 3 and iPhone 4S. Husband has an iPad 3 and iPhone 5.

Why organizations should check calendars carefully before scheduling events

Judi Sohn

Here's why the organizations shouldn't shrug it off: Jewish holidays (especially the big ones: Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Passover) aren't just about ritual. I shouldn't be asked to by organizations I trust and value. I can't help but resent when organizations would ask me to make that choice when they don't understand that it's not simply about ritual which can be done from anywhere.

One week later, I still haven’t touched my MacBook.

A Way to Track Membership Dates in Salesforce using Cross-Object Workflow

Judi Sohn

That I would get too much distance from the day-to-day of actually using Salesforce/Common Ground at an organization. So when an organization wants to track membership, they need to either install another 3rd party app or add custom functionality to their Salesforce instance. Recently two different organizations wanted to track on a contact/account records the date when membership will expire based on when a membership payment was last received. I have a confession.

I’m happy to say that the reality is turning out to be better than I was imagining back then. I love my job.
