I grew up in Oklahoma. But there’s a lot of unexpected beauty in Oklahoma—weird folk art with plastic deer, a beautiful house. But it was also a failure because I tried to reach an audience rather than approaching it from my own voice, and the result was that that audience--game people--felt that maybe I was mocking them.
