I met J.D. Lasica at the 2006 Blogher Conference where I found out about his one his projects on ourmedia - the Personal Media Learning Center. - a "Democratic knowledge clearing house." I subsequently joined the group of volunteers working on the project and am working on some how-tos myself, including a primer on screencasting ....
Meanwhile, JD Lasica has written an excellent how to piece that was published on TechSoup. The piece is titled "Digital Storytelling: A Tutorial in 10 Easy Steps.' As I'm struggling to learn screencasting - which is telling a digital story about software - I found this article enormously useful and helped me avoid several temper tantrums!
The ten steps are:
1. Decide on the Story You Want to Tell
2. Gather Your Materials
3. Begin Writing Your Script (I like the permission to write a lousy first draft)
4. Prep Your Equipment
5. Create a Storyboard
6. Digitize Your Media
7. Record A -Over
8. Add Music
9. Edit Your Story
10. Share Your Story
What I am struggling with most right at this moment and how to tell a story in a screencast without all of it being the software .... how to weave in other clips and photos seamlessly.
About that last point on sharing the video, I wrote a blog post on netsquared about nonprofit video channels, so I was delighted to see good roundup of all the video sharing services that are available to nonprofits from TechSoup. The only thing missing a discussion about the differences in the user agreements and rights assignments and mention of a few of commercial services where you (gulp) pay for hosting, but have complete control over your content.
I agree, Beth. It would be so helpful if someone would summarize the user agreements, and perhaps add a bit more analysis of the benefits of posting at each. After DoGooderTV pitched their story to me for my blog, I wrote back, asking them to share more about how they perceived the benefits of what they offered vs. YouTube, for example. Alas, they didn't respond.
