But, what still really stands out for me, is the addition of the cause-advocacy appeal once the meme hit the English translation.

The campaign spread and went viral via this copied status update, “Change your Facebook profile picture to a cartoon character from your childhood and invite your friends to do the same.

This technique is the " hold a sign meme " where you ask your community to send photos to flickr of you (or your animal) holding a protest sign.
