NpTech Community Snippets
Who let the (NpTech) dogs out? First there was a flickr group for NpTech Dogs and then we started seeing NpTechers with dog profiles on their Facebook profiles. It didn't take too long before we dogs (a lab no less) has appeared on a nonprofit app called Managing News. Michael Stein has a post titled "The Truth About Cats and Dogs and Lawn Chemicals." And finally, are cat lovers only to be found in Second Life?
I really need a vacation. I keep running into NpTechers posting vacation photos and blog posts. Ruby Sinreich just got back from a trip to London. Jon Stahl is off the Lake District for a couple of weeks of rambling amongst the hills and dales. Marnie Webb is on a road trip. What are your summer vacation plans?
If it isn't vacations, it's photos of restaurant and a fun evening out. Here's one from LOLNPTECH.org and Little Dishes 2 from the Non-Profit Tech Blog
Michelle Murrain posted about a NOSI primer is working on. When I popped out of the reader to write a comment on this excellent post, I was blown away by the new site design. Check it out.
Michael Stein has reclaimed his technorati profile for his blog. Do you follow your blog's technorati? Does it matter to you? I'm not sure if Christine obsesses about her technorati rating, but she sure does care about blog search widgets and has found something even better than the technorati widget.
Some transitions at npower and omidyar
Google Aps
Ian Wilker is happy about the Google Apps Education Education being available to
nonprofits for free, but even happier that Google is integrating jotspot , a wiki app, into Google Apps. Perhaps this is the result of Summer mixter at Google headquarters a few weeks back. More buzz here. NTEN is offering a Webinar on Google Aps.
NTEN posts about screencast about GoogleAps and SalesForce Integration for nonprofits. More here.
Alerted by "Tweet" (post on Twitter) from Andy Carvin, Michael Stein (East Coast) points to some privacy issues related to color printers.
Web2.0 Tools
Here's yet another post declaring the death of email due to Facebook and Myspace. Is a email users and non-users the next digital divide?
The TechSoup Blog has a list of ten cool web2.0 tools to adopt. Here's one that isn't on the list: Mindmeister
has been around for a while. It's an online collaborative mapping
tool. You import mindmap maps into it and can be useful for notetaking
in real time on conference calls. And don't forget, if you're going to adopt Web2.0 tools, you need to change your mindset. Listening is important.
Are you an appaholic?
Beaconfire Consultants has an analysis of nonprofit apps on Facebook. Read/Write web has the top ten Facebook Apps. O'Reilly Radar has a post about networking in Facebook. Why nothing about social aggregators?
The HighTouch Blog points to a survey from 160Characters detailing how quickly people expect responses from various forms of communication.
Donor Power Blog writes about success on YouTube and CrunchGear has a post about video compression and optimizing your video for YouTube - it's actually interesting!
Wild Apricot Blog has a post about using Meebo, an instant messaging tool, to engage your supporters.
What is mobile content and to create it - found out here.
Green Technology
Britt Bravo has a terrific interview with Chris Messina and Ivan Storck of Citizen Space about Green Coworking.
Unthinkingly blog has an interesting post about computer recyclying aptly titled "The Joy of e-waste"
Online Fundraising
Get $10,000 for your nonprofit plus a t-shirt.
DIA Blog has some great advice about HTML email testing.
Fundraising Success Magazine covers The Great Debate: Direct Mail vs Online Acquisition. More here. What do you think?
Via Jonathan Coleman, a pointer to an article by Katya Andresen's 10 Things To Engage Constituents Online. Steve Anderson, one of the only nonprofit techies to snag an Iphone, writes about enagment strategies and how to support with SalesForce. (I bet he won't be putting it in blender)
And, while we're talking about Iphones ... here's a fundraising strategy using an Iphone -- the nonprofit waited in line to purchase one and is auctioning it off. Too bad Apple isn't donating them to nonprofits!
Just what we need! Another online social networking cause-related fundraising site!
The NpTech Tag started as an experimental community tagging project in 2005. A loosely coupled group of nonprofit techies and social change activists decided to use the tag "NpTech" to identify web resources that would create an ongoing stream of information to promote and educate those working in nonprofit technology. Many individuals tag hundreds of resources each week. Through TechSoup's Netsquared project, blogger Beth Kanter, was commissioned to write a weekly summary.
