Hello, off topic but I noticed a really good diary at Kos Compendium of Public Domaain Image Links http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2007/1/20/15451/6564

This is a subject you've blogged on and maybe of interests.

Right before I read your post, I saw this comic that ties in with it:

I only have 103 feeds right now (compared to your 233 - wow!) and it's impossible to keep up with them. I know which ones are most important, and the others have to wait until I have more time to catch up.

Great post. I particularly like the part about how to read your listserv through bloglines. Wow!

And I thought my 42 feeds took time to work through!

Using folders is the way I organise and I have a "Friday afternoon" or "Slow day" folder for the less directly relevant to my work feeds.

Spambayes is the best and its FOSS. When I saw you used it I got that feeling you get when you meet someone who's into the same bands or same film genre as you!! Everyone should use Spambayes - tell the world!

I don't know how many feeds I have. The critical ones are on one page; secondary, fun and trial feeds are on a second page.

What about deleting feeds?

Maybe 2, 3 times a year I look at the feeds and say, I never read that one. Out it goes.

Another question I ask myself is, which feeds am I willing to delete before adding these 3 new ones? Sometimes none, but often 2 or 3.

Delete some feeds! It makes you feel good like cleaning out the junk drawer.

I love this post. For many of us, intermittent reading and blogging is what happens. It has to do with agenda and lifestyle. Going mobile has been big for me as I read the post and wrote this comment while parked waiting for my daughter. Bloglines has been key in this as well.

Great post Beth. We had an RSS brown bag lunch on basically 'feeds, why bother?' and a colleague of mine suggested the analogy, 'RSS is like your personal shopper'.

I like this a lot since it's all about targeted communication with our constituents. I have to think that one reason nonprofits are seeing a drop in email newsletter open rates (ebenchmark study) is because they're too general in a world becoming increasingly more niche oriented (thanks Long Tail - great read). Nonetheless, it's still a tough sell internally.

Re news readers, I've just switched from IntraVnews (outlook compatible) to google reader and love the folder aggregator feature. And also like that I can share particular hits to folks in the office. cool.

Lately I've been trying to figure out why I'm *not* having this problem so I can share the info.

I read somewhere between 800 and 850 feeds (I haven't counted in a while). Every once in a while it seems like too much, but on average, I don't seem to have much problem. I wish I could figure out what I'm doing that works for me.
