My Flickr Set: RootsCamp SL Machimina Session
Last Sunday, I drove like a bat out of hell from my Sharing Foundation board meeting in New Hampshire to my computer so I could log in to the RootsCampSL session on "Using Machinima for Social Change and Political Action." In the guy in the gray shirt is Paul Marino from the Academy of Machinima and Moo Money from Alt-Zoom studios.
I haven't a chance to finish processing my notes, but thanks to the collective intelligence of the Web, Aldon Hynes had already posted his notes and a machinima. (Hmm .. is this what JP is talking about?)
Some takeaways for me:
- I learned how to spell and pronounce this new genre of filmmaking.
Machinima (muh-sheen-eh-mah)
- A great FAQ is here
- I learned about the Second Life Camera Controls Tutorial and now playing with the camera in SL during meetings is my new form of 3D doodling.
- The official notes taken by Ruby and chat transcript are here. It includes pointers to good examples and excellent tutorials
I'm glad that I didn't post these right away because in a completely unrelated circumstance, I ran into Robin Good's piece on Machinima. The article provides a good primer and illustrates various genres of machinima created in different gaming environments. The article describes how the genre is linked to participatory/DIY culture.
The article includes a pointer to a YouTube video of a presentation of how Bells and Spurs (here's a pointer to the references in a photo I took of myself on the set several months ago) movie was made in Second Life.
