This past October, California joined New Jersey, Virginia, Hawaii, Vermont, and Maryland in passing legislation to create this new type of legally recognized company. Both bills have now been signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown. A structure has emerged to serve this purpose, called the Benefit Corporation.

B Corp is newer--right now it's a national trustmark (a certification, like organic), though Maryland just passed a law making "benefit corporation" a legal designation. And it apparently takes an incredible amount of time, relationships, and education to help foundations that don't currently make PRIs consider doing so.
