Basically, it allows one computer to serve several people in a lab or library at very low cost and with minimum maintenance. La Conner Regional Library was one of our test sites. It is a small, rural library that serves 5,000 people in the Skagit Valley in northern Washington State. She became the library tech person by default.

TechSoup's Refurbished Computer Initiative (RCI) has supplied more than 65,000 pieces of IT equipment to nonprofits and libraries in the last 10 years. Back in 2006, we started the RCI program to supply charities and libraries with good, low-cost warrantied computers that would stand the test of time.

Like any nonprofit, we like to take advantage of the product donations that are on offer for charities, churches, foundations, and libraries. It allows staff to view and reorganize documents in folders on individual laptops and then sync changes to the Box online platform. Our monthly charges are determined by the number of licenses.

The big nonprofit tech trends this past year seemed to be in the areas of the emergence of mobile devices, social media stratification, the launch of Office 365 for Nonprofits, some huge digital inclusion initiatives, and lots of other things. Tablet sales are up 53% while laptop and desktop computers are down 11% from the previous year.

During the intervening two years, we have entered the “post-PC” era in which laptop and desktop computers are being superseded by tablets, phones and other mobile devices. And indeed sales of new PCs and laptops are declining. This is an update of a TechSoup article we posted online in November 2011.

By "post-PC," Jobs meant essentially that computing and Internet use for both work and pleasure will no longer be dominated by PCs, but that there will be an array of smart devices including smartphones, tablet computers, smart TVs, laptops, and even sensing devices in our clothes and cars and other every day items.
