Developers who code solutions that integrate with Kintera using their open API platform, Connect , can win $15,000 or $5,000 (not the $25 K their big logo seems to suggest – that’s just the total they will award.) Depending on the project, those can be really useful.

According to the NTEN blog, it's a much deeper set of tools than before, and the site provides integration resources for organizations using social media sites like Facebook and YouTube in their strategies. Last week, the major competitor to Convio, Kintera, announced its "open API" last week. Let me pause for a second.

One vendor said that very few nonprofits have the resources to take advantage of APIs. Someone (I think it was Nick or Peter) said that nonprofits can do more than vendors think they can – so providing the resources is important.

Kintera uses something proprietary, as well as Convio. In the end, the vast majority of non profits simply do not have the technology resources to use most open source solutions. Other companies in the NP space are similar. I believe eTapestry runs on a database package called Versant.
