We are unapologetic about focusing local. Focusing local helps us define our community by identity. We have partnered with the county-wide community assessment project to learn more about the demographics, interests, and needs of local residents. Some of our best volunteers come from the County court referral system.

Sometimes we purposefully bridge distinct groups as well such as middle-aged women from local knitting groups with young college students interested in street art to yarn bomb our stairwell for Radical Craft Night. We are constantly looking for new meaningful opportunities to bridge groups and individuals in our programs.

These sparks grew into sustained lifelong learning for at least 400 people, who got involved in local technology hobbyist projects, who pursued careers in science and technology, and helped us facilitate learning experiences as volunteers at the museum.

Louis, a volunteer-led organization that I was on the board for, and I now manage the Friends of Pedal, which is a similar group as Pedal the Cause. We need to be thinking about the motivations of the volunteers we want to engage. About 54% are interested in volunteering in some way. And my contact information is there as well.
