Beck''s project is unusual because he deliberately resurrected a mostly-defunct participatory platform: sheet music for popular songs. Sheet music is a beautiful analogy for this.

Before the Princes of Surf exhibition, these boards rested deep in the collection storage of the Bishop Museum in Hawaii. Grown men fighting for seats at lectures about the history of the boards.
