Our staff are actively working in the region in Sri Lanka and East Timor, but on December 26th were not in harm's way. Our partner groups and friends in Sri Lanka have also fared well, to our relief. Like the rest of the world, we have been following the Asian disaster closely.

I covered our Human Rights program, including the Martus Project and the Human Rights Data Analysis Group (which joined Benetech last year). This is based on a talk I gave in Sri Lanka last year at the University of Peradeniya, but with a heavier technology component given the engineering audience.

We've been developing Miradi for three years together with the Conservation Measures Partnership (which includes groups like The Nature Conservancy and the World Wildlife Fund), and began beta testing the software in 2007. We work with human rights groups all over the world. The feedback has been amazing.

I also lived in Sri Lanka right about the time that sex tourism became a big deal, and saw it firsthand. I found a really amazing group of people here in the States that really wanted to do something to help change circumstances for people in these situations. At that point we didn't have a name for it. It started out small.

This type of documentation is often a critical step in the large-scale data analysis projects conducted by Benetech’s Human Rights Data Analysis Group (HRDAG) in partnership with human rights organizations. I emphasized how groups can make claims that are grounded in the data and are therefore stronger against attacks by critics.

The discussion about membership of an organization and what it means to be active: lots of people would have joined a group or gone to a meeting without contributing. Like Sri Lanka where pictures weren’t getting out. It’s important to sustain that information and interest.
