How to Get Long Life Out of Laptop and Cell Phone Batteries

Dell says that a full life span for a garden-variety lithium-ion laptop battery is 18 to 24 months. In order to keep rechargeable batteries healthy, the refurbishers that I've spoken to about this tend to agree that with lithium-ion rechargeable batteries that power most laptops, mobile phones and tablet computers, it's not good to let the battery go below 10% of its charge. Lithium-ion batteries are actually pretty benign environmentally.

I hope you'll pardon me if I start with a green tech thing. A woman named Gail Work stopped by to chat about her new non-toxic green battery company in Silicon Valley called SeaWave Battery. She said that it generates more electricity at a lower cost than lead-acid and lithium ion batteries. I had a chance this week to preside over TechSoup’s booth at the latest Social Capital Markets conference (SOCAP) in San Francisco.

So we are looking at finding batteries that hold a charge for a long period of time, that give people the extended range that they need to do their commuting, and new technology such as the lithium ion battery have the potential to do that, but right now they are very expensive because automakers haven't invested the R&D money into those battery technologies to really stimulate the change that is needed for them to be able to use those batteries in the application of the plug-in hybrid.
