Here's our look at the most interesting and fun things that happened in nonprofit technology this year. Lithium ion battery failures were big again this past year. Lithium ion batteries will continue to power our mobile devices — and continue to catch fire now and then, but not that often. Nonprofits have been doing some interesting technology work through projects like Digital Promise Global , which is doing job training in refugee zones.

In June, the Stanford Social Innovation Review published a two-part piece by TechSoup Global Founder and Chief Instigator, Daniel Ben-Horin. I thought it might be fun to recount a perfectly random cross-section of folks who came by chat at the TechSoup booth on a Tuesday at the SOCAP event. She said that it generates more electricity at a lower cost than lead-acid and lithium ion batteries.

So we are looking at finding batteries that hold a charge for a long period of time, that give people the extended range that they need to do their commuting, and new technology such as the lithium ion battery have the potential to do that, but right now they are very expensive because automakers haven't invested the R&D money into those battery technologies to really stimulate the change that is needed for them to be able to use those batteries in the application of the plug-in hybrid.
