Campaigns Don’t Have To Be Sad!

The issues non-profits and charities deal with are normally very serious, and it can difficult to find fun in their work. These ingenious campaigns managed to use humour to bring attention to their very important concerns, and encouraged lots of people to get involved.

These funny non-profit online campaigns will make you laugh, cry and maybe even donate. We hope they entertain you, and maybe even inspire future campaigns for your non-profit. Ranging from big budgets to small, and all kinds of causes, there’s something for everyone.

1. ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Starting with the most famous, ALS Association created this campaign, encouraging people to pour a bucket of ice water over their heads to raise awareness for ALS. Participants then had to tag some friends and challenge them to do the same.

This resulted in thousands of hilarious videos, spreading the word and increasing donations, without ALS even having to produce the content. It’s a great example of how powerful social media and user-generated content can be for nonprofits.

Check out this video of some of the funniest ice bucket videos.

2. Metro Trains Melbourne – Dumb Ways to Die

Using dark humour, and a super catchy song, Metro Trains managed to get their message of safety around train lines across the world, and stuck in everyone’s heads, becoming the most shared public service announcement in the world.

The video depicts some of the most ridiculous and avoidable ways to die, including not practising basic safety around trains. This campaign was so successful it even branched out into an addictive mobile game, with 190 million downloads!

3.  Team Rubicon – Box of Awesomeness

In 2013, Team Rubicon began selling boxes of awesomeness on Amazon. These (non-existent) boxes came in a range of sizes and would be filled with ‘100% upcycled/organic/free-range awesomeness’.

Buying one essentially amounted to donating to the non-profit, but this didn’t stop donors from leaving outlandish and hilarious reviews of the ‘awesomeness’ they claimed to receive.

The campaign also resulted in an equally entertaining response letter when Amazon took down the boxes for not matching their seller guidelines. This campaign shows that you can get creative with encouraging supporters to donate (just make sure you read the guidelines first.)

4. Malaria No More – Malarious

Malaria No More teamed up with CollegeHumor.com to create their Malarious campaign.

Twenty-four comedy videos were produced, staring some of the best-known comedians, and to access the content all you had to do was donate to Malaria No More, as little as $1!

5. Furkids – Kitty Kommercial

Furkids, a no-kill animal shelter in Atlanta created this fun video, advertising the fantastic cats they have waiting for a new home.

The video went viral, with over 5 million views, proving that you don’t need a massive budget to make an entertaining and successful online marketing campaign.

6.  World Down syndrome day – #NOTSPECIALNEEDS

The #NOTSPECIALNEEDS video was produced for world down syndrome day. The video blended humour and a heart-warming message, to challenge people on how they view people with Down syndrome.

Spreading the message that the needs of people with down syndrome aren’t ‘special needs’, they’re just human needs we all have, the need for love, care and opportunity.

When non-profits aim to challenge peoples perceptions, rather than convince them to donate it comes with a whole new set of difficulties, but this video balances it perfectly.
