Six Online Fundraising Tools You May Have Never Heard Of

May 24, 2011

[tweetmeme] You got to give it to the social good entrepreneurs. Seemingly every week a new fundraising or cause awareness tool hits the Web for nonprofits to experiment with, and though donation processing fees must be applied or ads sold for these social enterprises to be sustainable, it’s clear that their motives are altruistic. That said, here are six new fundraising tools for nonprofits to explore:

1. SwipeGood :: swipegood.com :: FAQ

SwipeGood enables donors to round up all of their debit or credit card purchases to the nearest dollar and allows them to donate the difference to the charity their choice.

2. Philanthroper :: philanthroper.com :: FAQ

You know those daily deal sites? They’re another one of those. But instead of selling something, they share the story of a new 501(c)3 nonprofit every day. And if you’d like the nonprofit, you can give them $1. They’re trying to make doing good a habit.

3. GiveBack :: giveback.org :: FAQ

GiveBack allows donors to create their own foundations (giving portfolios) where they can follow their favorite nonprofits, donate directly, and allocate dollars raised through their online shopping portal.

4. Give a Tweet :: giveatweet.com :: FAQ

Give a Tweet was founded to leverage the real-time power of Twitter to make it easy to donate to non-profits. Donors can either give directly to nonprofits, or match another donor’s gift. It’s a creative way for business brands on Twitter to get recognized for their philanthropy.

5. Cauzoom :: cauzoom.com :: FAQ

Cauzoom allows nonprofits to create projects/cauzs that can then be crowdfunded or endorsed by individuals and businesses.

6. BroadCause :: broadcause.com :: FAQ

BroadCause is a social good platform where individuals can join cause communities and nonprofits can create wish lists, events, and fundraise. Integrated with Twitter, there is also a corporate giving component where brands can sponsor your nonprofit’s cause.

    Thanks for mentioning BroadCause. One other important fact about BC– it’s powered by Experience Project (http://www.experienceproject.com), which houses a multi-million member community that’s shared over 10M experiences. Every experience has a cause, and it’s an amazingly powerful way to connect causes with the people who care about them. Thanks again, and we’d be happy to help anyone get set up– just click ‘contact’ on our site and we’ll call you back.

    The micro-payment service Flattr (www.flattr.com) offers special accounts for charities. It’s a good way to receive donations for content on the web. (not only for nonprofits)
    I also find very interesting the connection to the offline world: Nonprofits can use QR-codes on their printed material and people donate by scanning them with their phones.

    May want to also add to your list (http://www.ConnectToCharity.com)

    Hi All:

    Another terrific resource is CitizenCRM, the first donor management Web App purpose built for small to mid-sized nonprofits that comes automatically configured to work seamlessly with your email gateway accounts (ConstantContact and MailChimp), Payment Processors (PayPal now, more soon), Event Management apps (Brown Paper Tickets and Facebook Events) and of course, social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and soon, LinkedIn too. We’re in Beta testing right ow and would love your feedback. Totally free during our Beta period and for at least one month after we launch commercially.

    Just goes to prove, yet again, how powerful social media can be as fundraising tools. I would like to know how these options compare in percentage of the donation that goes to the nonprofit. That is part of transparency and something nonprofits and donors should both know when choosing where to donate.

      Agreed. Watching where the funds flow is critical to supporting a NP’s mission

    It seems my comment didn’t get through:

    Love these – love how innovation is taking off in this market… we’d definitely add our peer driven fundraising product to the mix http://www.globalcurrents.org/piertopeer – not to be totally spammy but I definitely love the innovation happening in the field.

    You should definitely throw Piryx, http://piryx.com on your list of fundraising platforms. No matter what your cause is, whether it be a non-profit, school, charity, sports team, group, club, mission trip, or personal fundraising campaign, they provide all causes with free fundraising tools to grow your exposure and raise money via email, facebook, twitter, and other web channels. They process your donations and give you donor management tools to track and keep in touch with individual donors. The only cost is a small transaction fee. That’s it.

    I just e-mailed this out to my non profit class from the spring. We spent a lot of time talking about how social media and the online network of donors is changing the way non profits do business. These six sites offer even more proof of that fact.

    Swipegood is not a Non-profit! They take a cut.

      I didn’t say they are a nonprofit, and these sites can’t exist unless they take a cut. No one works for free. 🙂

    Hi all,

    This has been a great resource and thank you for sharing it. SwipeGood caught my eye, as I work for The Pennies Foundation (http://www.pennies.org.uk/) in the UK, who are similarly harnessing micro-donations to raise money for charities. We are a registered charity, not a social venture. Our focus is on the retailer enabling a round-up option, as opposed to the credit card company, allowing consumers to make one off payments. We launched in November 2010 and have already raised over £100,000 ($160,000), proved that pennies really do add up, so it is great to hear of others out there harnessing this potential.

    These are great services and I’ll be sure to sign up for SwipeGood. Thanks for putting this list together. I just wanted to add one more for your consideration. GiftingWishes.com is a new online service that allows nonprofits to post wish lists online for free and receive monetary donations for those items directly. The purpose of the service is to answer the most common donor question, “How will my money be used?” After a wish list is created by the nonprofit organization, the service then promotes the needs of the organization through traditional and social media.
