To make this model work, there was another IRC backchannel that streamed audio from the conference and someone did the equivalent of live tweeting. I remember in 2005 the Global Voices Summit used IRC as a backchannel -- no so much for people in the room, but for remote participation. One of the reflections.

While there are some criticisms of its consensus-based model for information-vetting, there's no doubt of its success as a collaborative knowledge-creation project.
