Specifically, the Brooklyn Museum is doing research about the role of independence and influence in participatory experiences.

This was reflected again in a great encounter I had at the Walter's Art Museum later in the weekend, when a silver-haired, well-coiffed lady (the perfect image of a traditional museum goer) told me "I get so annoyed by how quiet museums are. But a few people seemed nervous that we were trying to trick or evaluate them.

I've only visited about 0.01% of the institutions out there and I suspect that the other 99.99% includes some real gems. It's not their size or type or subject matter.

Our museum in Santa Cruz has been slammed by those who believe participatory experiences have gone too far. We always knew that the inclusion of participatory and community-centered practices in arts institutions was controversial.
