Trainer’s Notebook: Just A Few Participatory Facilitation Techniques

Evaluate your content, facilitation, and logistical skills against participant evaluations. If time is available, also do a plus/delta exercise with participants as a close out to the session. Earlier this month, I presented on a panel called “ Learn, You Will ” with Cindy Leonard, John Kenyon, and Andrea Berry on the topic of designing effective nonprofit technology training at the Nonprofit Technology Conference hosted by NTEN. Each of us took on a different aspect of nonprofit technology design and incorporated some interactive exercises. Using Peer Learning Strategies To Build A Network

As part of my work plan as Visiting Scholar at the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, I have the pleasure of working with networks of grantees to design and facilitate peer learning exchanges on networked nonprofit practices and using social media effectively. One of the networks I’m supporting are the grantees in the Friending the Finish Line strategy. As with all the capacity building projects that I’ve designed, it is based on a framework and theory of change.

I was pleased with workshop, even though it was the first time and that is always difficult because instruction improves with feedback from learners. The content on the wiki has now organized into an instructional format as a two-day face-to-face workshop. Being able to make decisions and evaluate are more appropriate for a learning experience delivered over time such as a semester long course or at least having some time and space in between sessions.
