The Foundation for Black Communities, Black Health Alliance, TAIBU Community Health Centre, Ontario Nonprofit Network, and Imagine Canada (the Partnership Collective) are conducting research to learn about extended health benefits (e.g., prescription drugs, dental, vision, physiotherapy, psychotherapy) at Canadian nonprofit organizations. These organizations include those that are led by people who identify as Black, or have a governance structure that is majority Black (Black-led); the primary service users, population served, or organizations supported are Black, or explicitly serve Black people and/or communities (Black-serving); and the organization is mandated or designed to serve Black populations or communities (Black-mandated).

Specifically, this initiative seeks to understand: how common it is for Black-led, serving and mandated organizations to have extended health insurance; if staff and volunteers at Black-led, serving and mandated organizations have access to or use extended health benefits; the challenges or successes faced in obtaining extended group health benefits and employee assistance plans; and the implications of not having benefits and access to supports that are culturally responsive and trauma-informed.
