Facebook Page Admins Can Now Remove Other Admins (Including the Original Page Creator)
[tweetmeme] A really simple, but crucial upgrade… but also potentially problematic. Facebook Page Admins can now remove other Admins – including the Page’s original creator. Nonprofits (and businesses) have been requesting this functionality for years. It is often the case that the original Page creator is a long-gone volunteer, intern or staff member, yet they continue to have access and control over a nonprofit’s Facebook Page because the functionality to remove them as an Admin did not exist. It does now.
The flip side of this good news is that nonprofits now need to be very careful about who they make Admins of their Page(s). In a worst case, likely very rare scenario, a disgruntled staff member, intern or volunteer can remove all other Admins and take control of the Page. It would have been better if this functionality was only enabled for the Page creator – that he or she could remove himself/herself only and enable a primary Admin. This functionality was announced one hour ago and initial feedback is not good, so perhaps Facebook will tweak the functionality in the coming days (like they did for default landing Tabs).
To remove the Page Admin that created your organization’s Page, but is no longer associated with your organization, got to Edit Page > Admins > Remove Admin:

yes it crucial upgrade in facebook..really appreciate for it
Glad I spotted your post as we had our non-profit’s page made initially by a group of students doing a little marketing project for us and only after the fact realised that we couldn’t remove them as admin. It’s never created a problem for us as they were a really great group but nonetheless its good to know that we can remove them – you never know what might get posted up by mistake after a night at the student union!!
Thanks for the head’s up.
this is great, thanks for the update! if an admin creates the username for the page, will it transfer over too (i.e. not be stuck to the page creator)? i would think so, but does anyone know the answer to that?
Requiring the original creator be the one to initiate the removal is a problem. What if they are long gone? Or left on bad terms? Are you sure that we can remove the original creator? Everything else I’ve seen indicates the opposite.
Hi… it is not just the original creator that can only remove herself/himself…. any Admin can now remove any other Admin… including the original creator. The link to the FB announcement is in the blog post. Thanks.
Lol how stupid is that, IMO this feature should only be provided to the original owner and no one else.
This is very important. Viko, I’ll give you a scenario, though the original post did include it as well.
I had a client who lost access to their DOMAIN. They had one employee – of several – who managed their website. During cutbacks this employee was let go. As a result, she changed the password to the domain and pulled down the site. This was a multi-million dollar organization.
It is critical that not just one person has access to control of a site or in this case, page.
This upgrade only makes sense if the person who created the page is not the creator of the movement/group/company, and even then, it would be irresponsible of Facebook not to add at least an extra layer of verification. How is vindictive activity by a disgruntled page creator any different from that by a non-creator who decides to take over a page?
The least Facebook can do is require at least two (or more) admins to sign off on the removal of the page creator…they deserve at least that little bit of respect.
heey how can i protict my self from any 1 wana remove me im the crator !!!!
plz answer me !
I don’t see that there is still an option to remove an admin..only the option to add. I want to remove! Help!
It’s definitely there. Keep looking around, but again… you may have set it up wrong. Are you sure you have a Page, or did you create profile for your organization?
It’s there… just look again. 🙂
Conversely, when the creator and all admins are removed from the page, how do you get to know the creator. I’m facing trouble trying to trace the creator of a page meant to malign our company. Please help.
No way to fin out except report the page and email Facebook. Good luck.
And then starts Admins Wars: Control over the Page
great, itz a nice step,,,,thanks FB thanks many…..coz, I made a group for my business, and the third party used my page lastly for misuse……
so, now i can delete the creator and admin……..
Does anyone know if Facebook notifies the old administrator that they “have been removed as an administrator of” the group’s page?
Nope, FB does not notify the “old” administrator when he is removed. We just tried that… had me added as an administrator, and then remove the creator/administrator. The only thing he said he noticed was, in his words:
“I just saw the list of fan pages go smaller on my window. FB does automatic refreshes
and i saw the pg go away. When you are an admin you have a short cut to your page on your left bar.”
I set up a business account for bath bomb creations. I added my sis Anita Bonney as page admin. I now can only leave message on other FBs when logged in as Anita. When people click on the picture it goes to the admin page FB and shows nothing for Bath Bomb Creation. Bath Bomb Creation is suddenly a Page which we do not want. Now I cannot remove this single Admin. No option. So should I just delete Anita’s account and the Bath Bomb page will be ok? Before I had Anita as admin, when BBc left a messa…

Pages can’t leave comments on other’s walls, only people (admins)… or “Use your page as your [page Name].” If you are new to Facebook, it’s best to get training:

Can you help? On our work fan page for facebook both myself and another worker are admins. He set up the page and i am unable to remove him as an admin as i dont have the password. He has now left the company and i am concern we dont have control as an organisation. Please can you email me any replies. Many thanks.
If you don’t have the password and you were not named an admin before the person left, then either track down the person or start over with a new page. Good luck.
The creator of a page I am admin on, removed himself as admin. Can he still access the account, seeing he has the password? How can I change the password?
Thanks!
No… he can’t. Your password is your personal account password… no need to change it.
I very much understand both sides of the functionality, but i am very much against the excessive authority additional admins have. If i am the original creator of the page … I would very much hate having some additional admin remove me. I am sure it would not take a lot of work to code the functions right and prevent the main admin from being ever removed. So far this extra function prevented me from having additional admins on any of the pages I am currently administrating. NOT a good function really … or more exactly, not a well though and deployed one.
So has anyone removed themselves from admin with no problems?
Thanks and have a happy day!!
Carrie =)
I am a creator and someone removed me. That’s crazy. I had to have someone accept me. What’s that all about? It seems like there will be too many chiefs.
People actually asked for that ability for years… to remove the creator since so many were long gone volunteers and interns. 🙂
THis is only shows stupidity from facebook, is there any braindrain happening inside facebook. What they could have done is that they could have given right to creator to leave on himself. If he is a leaving the page he can handover control to someone else. If he has created the page and he is still active on the page, then what the hell !! why other admins could be given rights to remove him. Its like ” I created a company, and appointed some directors into the board. And later when its making profit, directors fired me out of it and took control of the company even if I haven’t transferred my ownership to them.” Isn’t that funny scenario. This new rule of facebook page seems something like that.
I agree. Facebook is condoning what corporations have been doing to creators and inventors. Removing a creator of a page without their permission is simply a type of corporate takeover. And it condones disrespectful behavior The additional admins can always have the option of starting their own page if there are differences with the creator. But giving them that option to remove the creator behind their back is just treachery, plain and simple. Any child can recognize the immorality in this. The creator could have invested a lot of effort initially and does not deserve to be kicked out just like that. I think facebook should give removed creators an option to take back their pages. Creators who support the new admins would obviously not ask for that, but those who ask for their pages back have been
victims usurpation and treachery.
so what recourse do you have if you are the original creator of a group and some disgruntled admin removes you and usurps control without any kind of consent?
Will removed person gets notification of removal?
No.
I am the creator and administrator for a closed group. I named 3 different members as admins. I would like to remove one of the administrators from that position but not from the group. If I hit “remove admin” located underneath their face icon under membership, will that remove them from the group entirely or just remove them from the position? I really don’t want to delete this person just remove them from the admin position. Please get back asap with answer. Thanks.
I’m answering my own comment. Once another admin clicks on “remove admin” that person is Gone for good from the group, even if they are the one who created the group and appointed the admins.
There should be a feature reserved for the creator — the option to lock their admin status.
Yeah, no kidding. I created a group, and named a few long time members as admins to help out with the maintenance. They wanted the group to go a new direction, but I didn’t. I told them to start a new group if they were that gung-ho about change, and instead, they removed me as admin.
Good job Facebook. And good job at not answering any messages about this problem.
Help: I currently had a developer make a new business page for me and invited me to be an Admin. He has now left the company – he and I are still admins on the page and I would like to remove him but I cannot as I dont have the password to authorize this – he set it up.
Does anyone know how to reset the admin password? So I can remove this person from my business page?
Thanks in advance
Nope. You have to contact him and in the future make sure you all that data stored in a spreadsheet. 🙂
hi im a owner of my page and i make my friend moderator but he delete me from page and abusing on my page what i will do to get my page 😦
Help! I accidently removed myself as admin of MY business page! Now I cant seem to get it back from my personal page! What can I do?
Contact Facebook, but to be honest… chances are slim they will respond. Search their Help section.
Can I recover my admin position of my facebook page if some other admin removed me from my admin post??
Please send the answer to my e-mail Address
You can try emailing Facebook, but that’s a very long shot. This happens from time to time.
When you remove an Admin from a page – what password will it ask for to verify? Is it your personal FB password or the personal FB password of the person that originally created the page?
