Lame spams of the day: Fake Amazon and PayPal receipts

Robert Weiner

I got a big batch of these today. They're similar to the fake Amazon HDTV receipts I wrote about in September. These aren't as lame-looking as most of the spam I write about: they use the right logos, fonts, and typefaces. This site says they lead to malware. The giveaways are: 1) Hover over the links and see where they point before clicking (that's the best way to prevent phishing attacks and malware infections from spam). 2) The Amazon receipts have no details about what I purchased. 3) I got

121 Billion and Counting

NCE Social Media

A new study has found that Americans have spent 121 billion minutes on social media this year. That’s up more than 37% from last year alone. How much time is that really? Imagine watching Honey Boo Boo for over 460,000 years nonstop. That’s crazy! At 121 billion minutes, that means the average American, including all newborns and the most senior of senior citizens, spends 6 hours on social media each year.

Last-Minute Gift Guide for Social Impact

Amy Sample Ward

When budgets are small or time is running out, many people turn to Do-It-Yourself options for holiday gifts. I know I’ve done it: from homemade soap to custom spice mixes, it’s fun to create something for people you love. It makes me feel like I’m giving of myself and still giving “something” But, one thing I’ve learned through the process is that I actually end up spending at least as much money and certainly a ton of time putting those gifts together.

Kids and Philanthropy: Teaching Your Children To Be Charitable

Beth's Blog: How Nonprofits Can Use Social Media

I was thrilled to be profiled in Fast Company’s Generosity Series this week. Generosity is baked into my DNA and I can’t help it. I don’t do this with an expectation of any return–financial or otherwise. I’ve been volunteering for community causes since I was a kid, something my family encouraged. I grew up at the Jersey Shore. When I was in the third grade, I volunteered to bake cupcakes to help fundraise for Lucy the Elephant (who thankfully survived super storm Sandy ).

Training on your new database

Robert Weiner

A question was posted to a listserve for nonprofit techies looking for tips on training staff on a new database. I discussed training at a high level on page 13 of this chapter from CASE's Handbook of Institutional Advancement. Maybe It’s Not Your Database, It’s You

Robert Weiner

I'm working on an article with the title, "Maybe It's Not Your Database, It's You." The premise is that complaints about an organization's database may be misdirected: the problem is how the system is being managed (aka management problems disguised as technology problems). Now, it's certainly possible that an organization chose the wrong database to begin with, or has outgrown the system they chose, or the vendor isn't providing good support and keeping the technology up to date.

Why do surfers drive 14 hours to a waterless desert surfing campsite to risk body and board for only a few seconds on the face of a wave?
