eBooks #2: So you want to e-publish? Mechanics…

Zen and the Art of Nonprofit Technology

Obviously for me, publishing eBooks is going to be something I do at some point, perhaps sooner rather than later. I’m talking in this post about self-publishing eBooks. Since this is a technology blog, and not a marketing blog, I won’t talk about the details of getting an ISBN number, or getting nice looking cover art, or getting the word out, etc. There are also avenues that will allow you to sell both your print book alongside your eBook.

Zen and the Art of Nonprofit Technology

EBooks are moving into adolescence, and the question is, which format will win, or does one format have to win? The truth, is, though, the iPad became the second most popular device to read eBooks in a very rapid amount of time , mostly to the detriment of the Kindle. Sony’s eBook reader and store dies because no one uses it. Google becomes second only to Amazon in eBook selling, eventually toppling Apple from #2 spot. Books Technology Zen amazon epub google

Fighting Accessibity Weaseling by Amazon et al, Victory!

Beneblog: Technology Meets Society

Last September, I wrote a Beneblog post: Objecting to Accessibility Weaseling , about Amazon and other ebook reader makers trying to dodge out on making their devices accessible. It''s always been highly ironic to me that the most natural buyers of ebooks, people with disabilities that make regular print useless, are constantly blocked in getting digital content that will talk to them, show up enlarged or in Braille! a11y accessibility Amazon blind Bookshare ebooks FCC Kindle NFB

A Call for Millions: Ending the Global Book Famine for the Blind

Beneblog: Technology Meets Society

We have the technology. We have the ebooks. The Global Treaty for the Blind makes it legal to create ebooks for people with disabilities without having to pay a royalty or getting permission. Publishers already contribute most of their ebooks to us for free, but The Treaty allows for crowdsourcing books at scale through a Napster-inspired model (but legal!). We have hundreds of thousands of ebooks in a dozen languages already available globally.

Technological Protection Measures and the Blind

Beneblog: Technology Meets Society

Why Circumvention for the Purposes of Access is Crucial A Bookshare Briefing Paper Prepared for the Diplomatic Conference for Visually Impaired Persons The distributors of digital content often use technological protection measures (TPMs) to discourage the making of unauthorized copies. This has created the ironic situation where blind people, who because of their disability require access to digital copies, have been effectively locked out of purchasing ebooks for the last decade.

Beneblog: Technology Meets Society

This is the field where I found my life’s calling, applying technology to meet critical needs of society, where the market is likely to fail. From my college dorm room, where I thought that pattern recognition could do more than target missiles, to my first successful high tech company where we built technology that could read just about any font without training, to Benetech’s founding with the Arkenstone reading machine for the blind.
