Digg, the once beloved link-sharing site that power users were able to game has been dying a slow death over the past couple of years. Since January of 2011 Digg’s unique web visits have declined by more than 50% and gone from 9.4M Sites like Reddit.com have clearly benefitted from Digg’s demise.

Pete Cashmore of Mashable has a post that asks an interesting question: Facebook, MySpace (MySpace reviews), LinkedIn (LinkedIn reviews), Digg and Twitter are often compared in terms of features, but which one has the most generous users? I don't think that you can really compare the entire user base of one social network with another.

I noticed that Google added a new feature where you can comment on a search engine result and like DIGG either promote it or demote it. I'm just getting back and I'm behind. Kevin Rose of Digg fame launched a new social sharing site called Pownce to much buzz and mixed reviews. Social network oversaturation, or just the summer slump? My Flickr Stream. Pownce lets you share files, links, and other info with your friends. It is a competitor of twitter and jaiku. It was invitation only.

The first session I attended was specifically about social networking and led by Brian Reich of Echo Ditto, author of Media Rules! A good tip Brian mentioned was to deputize people to grow your network for you. You may find better success participating in a niche social network like Changents or Gather.

Social Media and social networks allow for the quantum effects, paired elements at a distance. And another multiplier comes from Network Theory (not Einstein directly but building on physics and mathematics) which shows that a network strength is in its Weak ties / Loose connections. These influencers will be the first ones to react positively or negatively to information and share that information with their networks. Make sure you are hooked up to an RSS reader such as Google Reader or Netvibes to monitor everything from Twitter to Blogs to what stories hit the front page of Digg. RSS feeds are your friends.
