Today, we are poised at a moment in time where we can transcend the limitations of past book technologies and bring the power of books to all humans. However, as a technology, printed books come with serious challenges for some communities (like blind people) that technology can unlock. Love of the print book. We can do better!

It became a burden to his family and caregivers to constantly drop what they were doing to turn a page, so he began seeking out ebooks. It also demonstrates how each ebook that is added to the Bookshare collection is a brick in our members’ foundation of independence and inclusion.

This is becoming crucially important as the problem of delivering access to text is increasingly solved by the move to ebook publishing and solutions like our Bookshare library. The initial part of the project was to do a detailed survey of existing assistive technology products, to get a baseline for current support for accessible graphics.

Today, Bookshare serves over 330,000 American students with a rapidly growing collection of hundreds of thousands of accessible ebooks. Over and over again, it has allowed us to pilot and eventually scale technology solutions that empower disadvantaged communities. government and states like Texas.

While our activities often creates jobs beyond the core high technology jobs around software development and user support, we don't see it as our core competency. I was able to demonstrate what we do with the files the students help generate, using our Read2Go application on an iPad. Benetech is a tech social enterprise.
