The Olympics open today in China to a multitude of emotions, including anger from Tibetan, Darfurian, and Burmese human rights activists about China's role in the conflicts in these countries. They are asking people to Switch Over to Darfur , and watch the webcasts when sponsors' commercials air.

For instance, when we first started organizing on Facebook in 2005, we found many existing groups on campuses working to end the genocide in Darfur. So our role wasn't to try to convince people to become active, but to give them effective tools, like our congressional scorecard and 1-800-GENOCIDE hotline, to take action on a regular basis.

After Clinton spoke we heard from Ann Curry from NBC news who was honored for her coverage of Darfur. Unlike 99% of her news colleagues, Ann has actually gone to Darfur, and more than once. Actuallly, dessert was Clinton and Curry… two good role models for all of us. Stay tuned for some video from the event.

Like in January when Mia Farrow spoke in Second Life about Darfur at a virtual event sponsored by the U.S. And this Friday the President of the MacArthur Foundation will discuss the role of philanthropy in the virtual world with the Founder and CEO of Linden Labs (the creators of Second Life).
