There is so much happening in Second Life with nonprofits, educational institutions, museums, and libraries that it is hard to keep up. The amazing Wayne MacPhail has been helping the Alzheimer Society of Ontario and Second Life Library 2.0 curator Shadow Fugazi put together a photo exhibition in Second Life.

A few organizations in the nonprofit sector are exploring the power of the this type of gaming medium for social justice - take Camp Darfur for example. The office is located on "Information Island" and there are libraries near by. But can games like Second Life be a useful tool for social change?

For the past five years, the Mercantile Library in Cincinnati has honored Harriet Beecher Stowe's birthday by asking a writer to give the annual Harriet Beecher Stowe Lecture about, "Writing to Change the World." She also won the 2005 National Magazine Award for Reporting for her article, " Dying in Darfur ," in The New Yorker.

In-world speakers from nonprofits who spoke about their work included Evonne Heyning from Camp Darfur, Barry Joseph from Global Kids , Lori Bell from the Library Alliance , and Marc Sirkin from LLS. Jeska Linden , Community Manager for Linden Labs, has the mike in her hand, while her avatar is behind the podium in Second Life.
