Last week, I attended Structure Lab , a half-day workshop on legal and financial structures for ventures for social good. The Structure Lab is set up as a "game" in which you explore cards in various categories (values, assets, financing, etc.) to better articulate what you are really trying to do with your project concept.

I like to ask myself this question periodically, challenging myself to find substantive ways for visitors to contribute to our museum. We actively seek participation and develop structured opportunities for visitors to collaborate with us. We don't have to convince them that it's their museum.

Our museum has already had several requests to lend our support to bond measures that will be on the ballot in 2016. We reviewed a handful of existing policies from other institutions (local and national, museums and not), discussed their attributes, and started drafting/stealing/reworking with a Google doc. We only met once in person.

In his thoughtful preface to this project, I reconnected with five lessons I''ve learned from participatory projects in museums and cultural sites. If there are museum objects and visitors'' objects on display together, all should be afforded the same level of exhibit design, labels, etc. Constrain the input, free the output.

I’ve learned to do that and not only has it made the content we create better, but it’s also led to policy and structural change within our organization.
