Jim walked out of there with four refurbished laptops preloaded with Windows Multipoint Server and 16 NComputing thin clients. Energy Conservation Is a Requirement in Africa. Computers are a centerpiece of the school, but they needed super-energy-efficient technology to conserve the scarce electricity. and was off to Tanzania.

The green argument for electronics reuse goes beyond Williams and Kuehr, however. In his book Natural Capitalism , Paul Hawkin finds that the amount of material that goes into manufacturing a laptop is 4,000 to 1. When you discard a five-pound laptop, you are also throwing away the 20,000 pounds of raw materials it took to make it.

The library ordered 60 Dell refurbished desktop computers from TechSoup's Refurbished Computer Initiative (RCI) to provide its patrons with Internet access. It's undertaken 16 conservation projects to date with just three staff people. The Wi-Fi Internet connection and all the devices are powered by solar energy.

We also work with some socially responsible businesses like Green Mountain Coffee Roasters; we are working with Annie's Organic right now, and so a broad mix of people who are trying to make the world a better place. This was in the days where anything that moves on the Internet was exciting, so we had a real leg up.
