Repeat giving rates haven’t changed. between our Sierra Leone Mudslides appeal in August and our Harvey, Irma, and Mexico earthquake appeals in September. We had more than 600 nonprofits from 88 countries working hard to meet a $5,000 goal in our quarterly Accelerator program this month. This is compared with 7.3% So take heart!

Times have changed dramatically. We have multiple projects going right now in Sierra Leone. We assumed that Martus would require PCs and telecommunications that didn't exist there. Cybercafes are found in quite poor areas. And, of course, there are many human rights and social justice issues in Africa.

One such example involves the story of Fanta, a woman who managed her at-risk pregnancy and delivered a healthy baby with PIH’s help in Sierra Leone. By changing the presentation of Fanta’s story each time they shared it on their website and Facebook profile, PIH made the content feel fresh and engaging each time.

Sandy exposed our vulnerability to climate change. This puts New York City’s economic disparity on par with places like Sierra Leone or Namibia. Undoubtedly, the inequities in who bears the brunt of climate change will play out in similar ways on the larger global stage. Indeed they already are.
