However, as a technology, printed books come with serious challenges for some communities (like blind people) that technology can unlock. I believe it is a combination of copyright exceptions and business model innovations. To bring the power of books to everybody on this planet, we must make books truly accessible.

One year ago, on June 28, 2013, at a diplomatic conference in Marrakesh, Morocco, the World Intellectual Property Organization ( WIPO ) agreed on a historic international copyright exception for people with print disabilities. We hope that many other countries will follow India’s ratification.

The goal of the Treaty is to make a copyright exception for the blind and other people with disabilities that stop them from reading print, and to make import and export of accessible content legal. The biggest challenge for access is that it’s expensive. This post is my own personal take on those expert recommendations.

Gerry quickly did the legal research and came back to explain that my idea, which seemed like it should be illegal, was 100% permitted under an obscure provision of the copyright law! Bookshare has gone on to become the world’s largest library for people with disabilities, serving more than half a million kids with disabilities in the U.S.

Having a library of pre-made videos is helpful for the days when planned content falls through. Additionally, following trends is difficult for nonprofits when you take copyright challenges into account (organizations aren’t permitted to use a lot of trending audio). Second, it gives us a backlog of content.
