Its eight major islands (in terms of landmass) are Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan (Borneo), Sulawesi (Celebes), and Irian Jaya (the western half of Papua New Guinea). The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people was caused by Indonesian seismic activity. The country spans eight time zones.
