The hot topic was the proposal made by Brazil, Ecuador and Paraguay, for a global treaty (a treaty for which I was part of the expert drafting team).

To impact the World Banks anti-poverty policies, GCAP needed to show tangible grassroots support, difficult considering that its millions of members were spread out over 100 countries. All Care2 terms of service and privacy policies apply. This turned out to be a major mistake, as Brazilian national TV (national evening news!!)

I remember visiting a university in Brazil where a police reform course was being taught with a classroom of students and police officers. He did so by summoning the courage to tell his captain that students’ experience with police in Brazil had been one of repression and that they would run from anyone in uniform.

I certainly get inspired by getting to touch and be a part of some of the vast wilderness left on the planet, so the job has allowed me the privilege, which not everyone has, of going to Indonesia, and going to the Amazon in Brazil, and certainly that is fuel that will fill my engine for a very long time.
